Arthroscopy 101

Location: MD-2 at UW Veterinary School
This
lab will be an introduction to arthroscopy equipment, techniques, and
an opportunity to practice you new knowledge on both models (peppers,
pumpkins, and more!!!) and cadaver specimens. With 2 students per each
fully equipped arthroscope station, you will have maximum time for
hands on learning!
Avian Handling, PE, Common Diagnostics
Instructors: Dr. Richard Weaver and possibly Dr. John Wertz
Time: Thursday 1:00pm - 4:00 pm

An
introduction to the handling of birds in a clinical setting. Techniques
for obtaining mouth smears, blood drawing, fecal smears, subcutaneous
fluids, general restraint and other miscellaneous procedures will be
demonstrated. Also, students will have an opportunity to do quick
differential staining of cytologic slides of mouth and fecal smears to
identify common/uncommon flora, pathogens, etc. Discussion of common
presentations, complaints, problems of bird owners.
Exploring the World of Public Veterinary Practice
A Focus on the Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSEs or Prion Disease)
Time: Thursday 1:00 pm
Location: State Diagnostic Laboratory
This lab will present an overview of the animal TSEs that are present or have been detected in the US. Techniques for the diagnostic sampling of cattle, sheep and cervids will be demonstrated and students will be provided an opportunity to practice these. Students will also be shown the standard tests used to diagnose the TSEs and be able to view histology and immunohistochemistry slides. The students will also work through a case study involving one of the TSEs and a public practice issue. Veterinary students who have completed externships with USDA, APHIS, Veterinary Services will be available to share their experiences.

First Responder Emergency Lab
Instructor: Dr. Bach
Time: Thursday 1:00pm - 5:00pm
Location: MD-1 at UW Veterinary School
Basic
emergency procedures will be taught to participants including
indications, technique, and potential complications of the procedures.
The 4 hour laboratory will be a mixture of instruction/demonstration
with periods of participant practice on cadavers. Procedures to be
covered include basic ER suturing techniques, thoracocentesis,
abdominocentesis, thoracostomy tube placement, nasal oxygen catheter
placement, and venous cut down techniques.

Investigation of a Wildlife Mortality Outbreak
Instructor: Dr. Kysten Schuler and Dr. Carol Meteyer
Time: Thursday 1:00pm - 4:00pm
Location: USGS NWHC
Students
will be shuttled to the USGS National Wildlife Health Center (6006
Schroeder Rd., Madison). The NWHC monitors and diagnoses wildlife
disease outbreaks for the entire United States and performs research
critical to the conservation of our nation’s wildlife populations. It
is a federal resource unique only to Madison. A meet & greet
session, orientation, and tour of the facilities will familiarize
students with the everyday functions of the center. This will be
followed up with a hands-on wet-lab focusing on necropsy and tissue
collection protocols in the event of an avian or mammalian mortality
outbreak.
